At the end of the eleventh century, Pope Urban II initiated the First Crusade to try to conquer Jerusalem. This conflict was the first of a long series of wars complex, involving many sub-factions, struggling to maintain or expand their influence in the politico-religious imbroglio ruled the world at the time.
